Prepare a moving survival kit
Moving is often a matter of survival of the fittest-or most prepared!
For both local and international movers, below are some essential items to pack.
Keep these items with you; don't send them with the movers.

  • Prescriptions -Papers and keys for the new home
  • Clothing -First Aid kit -Tool kit -Pet supplies
  • Flashlight/batteries -Toiletries -Can Opener
  • Favorite toys/games for each child
  • Hardware for disassembled items
  • Maps -Important phone numbers
  • Household inventory and moving papers
  • Moving and travel papers and reciepts

    Packing
When considering packing, you may pack yourself or have professionals
perform the task for you. Obviously, professional packing by moving companies are the best, but if you prefer to pack yourself or need to save money, here are some tips:
  • Wrap dishes separately. Nest cups and bowls(you may want to put
tissue or bubble wrap between each item), stand plates, saucers and
    platters on edge.
  • Don't forget you need to bring items down from the attic and in from
the shed for the movers (also, don't forget to mention these areas when
    asking for estimates.)
  • Have major appliances disconnected before the movers arrive. They
cannot do it for you. -Defrost, clean, dry and deodorize all appliances.
  • Pad small appliances in paper or bubble wrap and pack in cartons.
  • Secure moveable parts on appliances and stereo equipment with tape or
blocks. -Pack lampshades in separate cartons and mark as such.
  • Pack heavy items, (such as books) in small boxes, lightweight items(such as linens) in large boxes. -Use drawers or wardrobe boxes to move clothing.
Protect the contents with tissue or bubble wrap. -Keep all hardware from
disassembled items together. Have tools handy for reassembly.
  • Drain garden hoses, coil and connect ends. Tie or tape garden tools together. -Drain gasoline or other fuels from all equipment.
  • Label cartons with contents and assigned room.
  • Tack up room names in new home on delivery day.
  • Be sure boxed items are well padded and fit snugly.
  • Seal cartons securely with packing(not masking) tape.

    Use proper packing materials
Heavy-duty, reinforced boxes are available from Crown Relocations Inc. Once you have determined what items are being moved, we can advise you on which boxes and how many will accomodate your needs. We deliver your box order for free (on orders over $50. Chicago/$75.Suburbs), and we'll buy back any unused, unassembled boxes, so be sure to order enough! Order online, by phone or by fax.
Used boxes may prove costly in the long run because:

  • They lack reinforcement and crush easily
  • Odd sizes and shapes make loading difficult which adds to labor costs. They are often difficult to seal securely and NEVER: -Pack heavy and fragile items together
  • Use newspaper to wrap china, lampshades or clothing(it smudges!)
